Ancient Egypt - Art & Magic. Treasures from the Fondation Gandur pour l'Art

Ancient Egypt has unrivaled power to stir the imagination. This exhibition and its accompanying catalogue explore an important theme in this grand civilization's art - the links beetween materials, artistic skill, and belief that informed Egyptian practice. Magic is indeed a key evocative term, because for the Egyptians art transformed and ordered the cosmos so as to assure the ordered continuity of the natural and human worlds

Ancient Egypt - Art & Magic is the first major exhibition of ancient Egyptian art held at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida. With 101 artworks dating from the pre-Dynastic era to the Ptolemaic periods, the essential media in which the Egyptians worked are represented - stone, bronze, gold, wood, papyrus, pigment, and encaustic. Each material conveys a variety of meanings associated with life and the afterlife of Egypt's elite, as well as with their cosmology. These objects were thought to possess transformative powers.

This exhibition explores that fascinating magical characteristic of ancien Egyptian art.
