The Architect's Hand
Paving the Way for the Future Museum in Caen
From 17 October 2026 to 8 January 2027, the City of Caen and the Fondation Gandur pour l'Art present The Architect's Hand, an exhibition showcasing the architectural and landscape design for the future Gandur Museum, set to open in Caen in 2031.
Curator: Marie Chatel
The Architect’s Hand: Paving the Way for the Future Museum in Caen marks a new stage in the lead-up to the Gandur Museum, which is expected to open in Caen in 2031. In 2025, In the Eye of the Collector offered a first look at the Fondation’s collections. This second chapter now unveils the architectural and landscape design by Barozzi Veiga, which will take shape between the Memorial Caen-Normandy and the Colline aux Oiseaux.
Eight internationally renowned practices took part in the consultation to design the future museum and its park. Visitors first discover the images, plans, and models of Barozzi Veiga’s project, unanimously selected in May 2026, before exploring the proposals by Grafton Architects, Mikoü Architecture, Moatti Rivière Architecture, OMA, Snøhetta Studio, Wilmotte & Associés Architectes, and Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop.
‘I hope that everyone will, in time, make this museum of a new kind their own, and that from its opening, this place of discovery, encounter, and life will establish itself as a landmark cultural institution in Caen, across Normandy, and far beyond.’ – Jean Claude Gandur‘Future visitors and the people of Caen are already beginning to dream of this museum. Until it opens in 2031, this exhibition will introduce them to the architectural visions that informed the thinking and brought forth the one that will, in time, give the museum its face. I would like to thank Jean Claude Gandur and the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art for their trust, as well as all the architects who agreed to take on this challenge.’ – Aristide Olivier, Mayor of Caen
