Chaissac – Dubuffet - entre plume et pinceau
Featuring 80 artworks (paintings, sculptures, art objects) from each artist, this exhibition has as its common theme the correspondence between Gaston Chaissac and Jean Dubuffet
Curators : Josette Rasle and Gaëlle Rageot-Deshayes
Chaissac’s colourful gouaches reveal the talents of an outstanding colourist. Dubuffet’s textured hautes pâtes technique succeeds in overwhelming the material. Although the means differ, the incessant spirit of experimentation that drives both artists is indeed one and the same.
Gaston Chaissac (1910-1964) and Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) met in 1946, through interposed letters and through Jean Paulhan. Their correspondence, consisting of 448 letters, is a veritable treasure trove where the public can rediscover their work through their respective passions and loathing, their hopes, successes and disappointments.
