Dubuffet and Art Brut. Outsider Art
From October 12, 2024, to February 16, 2025, the Mudec in Milan will host the exhibition Dubuffet e l'art brut. L’arte deli outsider, dedicated to the artist Jean Dubuffet and the movement he founded in post-war Paris to celebrate a form of art liberated from bourgeois and academic tradition and aesthetic conventions. The Fondation is lending four works for this occasion.
Curators: Sarah Lombardi, Anic Zanzi, Baptiste Brun
Artist and theorist Jean Dubuffet (Le Havre, 1901 – Paris, 1985) developed a new artistic concept called Art Brut, which is not associated with amateur or novice art, but rather with an art of instinct and pure expression, free from formalist or academic rules. Over a span of twenty years, Dubuffet collected and worked with the creations of many self-taught artists, who freely expressed themselves and their views on the world around them.
This exhibition, organised in collaboration with the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne, brings together more than 70 works, illustrating Jean Dubuffet's radical stance against the traditional art world. Through four thematic sections, it traces the historical conception of Art Brut based on Dubuffet's works, showcases the pieces he collected during his lifetime, and offers a more contemporary view of Art Brut through works from five continents, exploring themes of the body and beliefs.
The Fondation Gandur pour l’Art is contributing to this tribute by lending four works from its collection, reflecting Jean Dubuffet’s fascination with free expression and the fluid boundaries of art.
