Jean Tinguely

From October 10, 2024, to February 2, 2025, Pirelli HangarBicocca presents a retrospective on Jean Tinguely, one of art's greatest adventurers after 1945. The Fondation Gandur pour l’Art loans two works for this exhibition that underlines the radical and experimental nature of the artist, whose moving sculptures continues to shape contemporary art to this day.

Curators: Camille Morineau, Lucia Pesapane, Vicente Todolí

"I am a movement artist. I started with painting, but I got stuck, I was at a dead end". This is how Jean Tinguely (Fribourg, 1925 _ Bern, 1991 described himself. The artist focused all his experiments on overcoming two-dimensionality, tirelessly researching the movement of matter and objects, and constant change, with the aim of overturning the notion of a permanent, definitive composition. This artistic attitude speaks to broader existential issues, such as the uncertainty and transience of the human condition and the evolution of social and political contexts.

The exhibition Jean Tinguely, organised in collaboration with Museum Tinguely in Basel, marks the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth, with one of his most comprehensive retrospectives in Italy. More than thirty landmark works from the 1950s to the 1990s are brought together to show the evolution of Jean Tinguely’s practice. Starting with experimental méta-mecanique sculptures of the mid-1950s, the exhibition then reveals mechanical sculptures equipped with wheels and a motor, large machines, monumental machines, and works underlining the artist's great passion for Formula 1 and speed racing.

The Fondation Gandur pour l’Art participates in this exhibition through the loan of two major loans from its collection, illustrating Tinguely’s audacity and uniqueness in his quest for the unexpected and the ephemeral.
