Jean Tinguely
The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire of Geneva (MAH), Geneva, pays tribute to Jean Tinguely in celebration of the centenary of his birth. The Fondation Gandur pour l’Art has contributed to this unique event through the loan of six significant works.
Curator: Samuel Gross
To commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Jean Tinguely’s birth, the MAH honours the Swiss artist with an exhibition that foregrounds the breadth and richness of his artistic practice. Held at the Musée Rath, the exhibition reimagines the distinctive atmosphere of a show originally conceived by Tinguely himself in 1983 at this very venue. It brings together mechanical sculptures, previously unseen drawings, and spectacular installations that evoke what the artist referred to as “the dynamism of life.”
Rather than adhering to a traditional chronological retrospective, the MAH has embraced a deliberately fragmented and joyfully anarchic curatorial approach—one that remains faithful to Tinguely’s own spirit and vision. More than thirty mechanical sculptures enter into dialogue with a newly revealed selection of drawings, made possible in part by an exceptional donation to the museum from the Niki Charitable Art Foundation, which represents the artist’s estate.
Among the works on loan from the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art is Méta-Herbin (1955)—a seminal example of Tinguely’s early, pioneering output, and highlighted by the MAH as a key moment within the exhibition’s narrative—alongside five additional mechanical works by the artist, including Lampe No. 2 (1972) and Hommage à Dada – Max (1974).
