Judit Reigl, L'envol. Dessins et peintures (1954-2012)
From October 26, 2024, to February 23, 2025, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen will present an exhibition dedicated to Judit Reigl’s major series of drawings, from her Éclatements on paper (1954) to her Oiseaux (2012). On this occasion, the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art is lending two emblematic painted works, highlighting the close connection between painting and drawing in the artist’s work.
Curators: Milena Glicenstein and Hanna Alkema
A key figure in 20th-century abstraction, Judit Reigl is primarily known for her work as a painter. However, drawing was a consistent thread throughout her career, integral to the development of her visual language and pivotal in shaping the successive series that defined her distinctive body of work.
"L’envol" delves into this lesser-known aspect of her art, showcasing several notable series that reveal how her transition from pencil or ink to paint was not a rupture but rather a continuous evolution of her graphic and pictorial grammar.
The exhibition spans nearly six decades of creativity, from her early Éclatements, marking her entry into the history of French abstraction, to the 2012 Oiseaux, blending calligraphy with avian forms, brilliantly capturing the soaring nature of her drawing.
The Fondation Gandur pour l’Art pays tribute by lending two significant works, offering insight into how drawing remained a constant thread, stretching through all phases of her career.
