Serge Poliakoff. Le Rêve des formes

The Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris devotes a major retrospective to an abstract painter and leading figure of the Paris School, and presents almost 150 of the artist’s works, executed between 1946 and 1969

Curator : Dominique Gagneux

Like all the artists of the Total Abstraction movement, Poliakoff (1900-1969) explored the relationship between line and surface, content and form, colour and light. But the apparent formal unity of his artworks conceals the multiplicity of pictorial solutions revealed by this exhibition. Concentrated colours, the vibration of the material, as well as the skilful arrangement of forms that obtain a balance in their contained energetic tension, all play a vital role.

It is this reading that is privileged in this retrospective, which shows the singularity of a particularly sensitive approach and a corpus of work imbued with an intense spirituality that has no other object than this ‘dream of forms which is the great mystery to be gleaned from the abstract’ (Pierre Guéguen).
