Venezia, 1958. A selection of artworks from the Spanish Pavillion

The Galería Mayoral is celebrating its 30th anniversary with an exhibition reuniting for the first time around a dozen artworks presented in the Spanish pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 1958. An exhibition which left its mark on the history of post-war Spanish art.

Curator : María Dolores Jiménez Blanco

With the exhibition Venezia 1958, the gallery revisits an episode that marked a turning point in international recognition of Spanish art of the second half of the 20th century, both with regard to the dissemination of Spanish Informal Art and for the artists who took part in it. This project, as well as bringing together and displaying some of the artworks shown in Venice in 1958, also aims to analyse the pertinence and consequences of an exhibition-event held at a time when the Franco regime was particularly keen to present an image of modernity abroad.

More than 60 years later, this new exhibition reunites a dozen or so artworks by Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, Rafael Canogar, Antonio Saura, Manolo Millares and Manuel Rivera, which featured in the 1958 show and all come from important Spanish and international collections (Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia, Museo Chillida Leku, Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Estate of Manolo Millares, Estate of Manuel Rivera, Archives Antonio Saura, Collecció Bassat d'Art Contemporani and Fundación Helga de Alvear).
