190 L 1 by Peter Stämpfli
While a huge tyre and its tyre marks (Royal, 1971) have just been presented at Art Unlimited by the Galerie Vallois (Art Basel, 15-18 June 2017), the Kunsthaus in Aarau is showcasing the work of Peter Stämpfli (Deisswil, 1937) in its exhibition Swiss Pop Art (7 May - 1 October 2017). After having painted cars and then wheels before devoting himself almost exclusively to tyres and their marks since the 1970s, in his painting 190 L 1 (1974), Stämpfli questions the very notion of figuration present in his earlier pieces as well as the evolution of his work.
