(Dé)colonisations. African Artists Question History
From 20 May to 11 November 2026, the Mémorial de Caen is presenting the exhibition (De)colonisations. African Artists Question History: a journey inviting visitors to reflect on colonialism and its consequences through around sixty works created by African artists and members of the diaspora. The Fondation Gandur pour l’Art is contributing to the event through the loan of 23 works and scientific support for the exhibition catalogue.
Curators: Ayoko Mensah, Jean-Yves Marin
General curator: Isabelle Bournier
Whether paintings, photographs, sculptures or films, all the works have been produced by artists linked to the African continent and its diaspora who, in one way or another, question the course of history — the one that gave rise to slavery, colonisation and wars, but also the history that enabled resistance, peace and many forms of resilience.
Structured around five themes, the exhibition first explores the major role played by African soldiers in European colonial wars and the two World Wars. It then addresses the theme of injustice in colonised lands marked by violence, domination and exploitation. Subsequent sections are devoted to colonial oppression and resistance movements, followed by cultural hybridisation, identity tensions and the other challenges faced by African men and women after independence. The exhibition concludes with a reflection on today’s challenges, including environmental preservation, gender equality and equity between people and continents.
The exhibition thus invites visitors on a path through the visions, commitments and questions raised by nearly forty artists, allowing them to tell, show and teach the audience about the history of (de)colonisation, which concerns the entire world.
As principal partner, the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art is contributing to the exhibition by lending 23 artworks by the artists ABOUDIA, Léonce Raphaël AGBODJELOU, Kirubel Melke ALEMU, Omar BA, Godfried DONKOR, Sokey EDORH, Salah ELMUR, Samuel FOSSO, Lucie KAMSWEKERA, Gonçalo MABUNDA, Tessa MARS, JP MIKA, Aïda MULUNEH, Richard MUDARIKI, Kura SHOMALI and Dominique ZINKPÈ. The exhibition is also accompanied by a catalogue that contextualizes the different sections of the exhibition andfeatures a contribution from Olivia Fahmy, curator of the collection of African Contemporary Art and of the Diaspora.
