Dish : Pan's competition

Active in Urbino in the first third of the XVIth century, Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo is a major figure of istoriato maiolica. His production distinguishes itself by compositions skillfully constructed and by a great freedom of inspiration, drawn from mythology and Roman history. This earthenware glazed dish bears witness of this type of art. It depicts the musical contest opposing Apollo to Pan at its most decisive moment : that of the victory of the god.
